atha vyavasthitAn dRuShTvA dhArtra rAShTrAn kapidhvaja:|

pravRuttE Sastra saMpAtE dhanu rudyamya pANDava: ||

hRuShIkESaM tadA vAkya mida mAha mahIpatE|

arjuna uvAcha:-

sEnayO rubhayOr madhyE rathaM sthApayamE achyta||

yAva dEtAnnirIkShEhaM yOddhukAmA navasthitAn|

kairmayA saha yOddhavyam asmin raNa samudyamE||

yOtsyamAnA na vEkShEhaM ya EtEtra samAgatA:|

dhArtarAShTrasya durbuddhEr yuddhE priyachikIrShava:||

Word-to-word meanings:

mahIpatE= oh king!; atha= after the blowing of conches and drums by either sides; Sastra saMpAtE= application of weapons; pravRuttE(sati)= while about to engage; kapidhvaja:= the one who is fighting under the banner of hanuman; pANDava:= arjuna; vyavasthitAn= fully prepared for the battle; dhArtarAShTrAn= sons of dRutarAShTra; dRuShTvA= looked upon; dhanu:= bow; udyamya= raised; tadA= then; hRuShIkEsaM= kRuShNa, the controller of the Senses; idaM vAkyaM= these words; Aha= said

hE achyuta= Oh kRuShNa, one who is never bereft of all the natural auspicious qualities such as knowledge, resplendence, elegance, prowess, et al., and one who never gives up His devotees; asmin= this; raNa samudyamE= in the activity of engaging in battle; mayA= by me; kaissaha= with whom; yOddhavyaM= have to fight; yOddhukAmAn= desirous to fight; avasthitAn= standing in the front; EtAn= those; yAvat= as much as; ahaM= I; nirIkShE= can seem (tAvat= to that much); ubhayO= both; sEnayO:= armies; madhyE= to the middle; rathaM=(my) chariot; sthApaya= please keep

durbuddhE:= evil minded; dhArta rAShTrasya= unto duryOdhana; priyachikIrShaNa:= to cause happiness; yuddhE= in the battlefield; yE EtE= those who ; atra= here; samAgatA:= accumulated; yOtsyamAnAn= capable of fighting; ahaM= I; avEkShE= will see

Translation:

Sanjaya says: Arjuna with Hanuman or Siriya Thiruvadi on his chariot flag glanced at the shaken kaurava army. Then he turned towards Lord PArthasArathy and said thus, "O Lord, take my chariot in between the two armies. I would like to prepare myself on the details of war such as - who are my enemies, who should be fought with and in which way. I would like to make a note of those who have joined forces with the evil minded duryOdhana".
