Introduction

True Entity/substance(tattva), means to attain truth(hita) and final end to be attained(purushArtham) are the essence of vedic spiritual science. Among these the Ultimate True substance(parama tattvam) and ultimate means(parama hitam) is nArAyaNa alone, such is the conclusion of all the authorities of scriptures. Bhagavadgeeta clearly postulates the same teaching, hence yAmunAcharya’s geetArtha saMgraha starts with ascertaining the same.

1. svadharma gnAna vairAgya sAdhya bhaktyEka gOcharaM| nArAyaNa: paraM brahmagItA SAStrE samIRita:||

By practisng one’s own varNa(birth and professional) and Asrama(celibate/household/retired/renounced order) dharmas(prescribed duties), by attaining the knowledge of soul and Supreme Soul, due to one’s dispassion towards worldly pleasures one can attain bhakti yOga(the devotional disposition/service towards nArAyaNa). The Supreme Lord is none but SrImAn nArAyaNa, and one can attain Him by practicing bhakti yOga. SrImAn nArAyaNa alone is the subject matter of bhagavadgeeta. His Supreme nature alone is to be known from Bhagavadgeeta.

In the remaining three verses the essence of the three hexades(a group of six chapters) each.

yOga means realizing oneself completely. It is the result of refinement of gnAna yOga and karma yOga with dispassion. The first hexade describes all the methodology of the self realization.

In the middle hexade the most smart and short means, bhakti yOga is given. It is full of supreme knowledge

3. madhyamE bhagavattatvayAdhAtmyAvApti siddhayE| gnAna karmAbhi nirtvartyO bhakti yOga: prakIrtita:||

In the second hexade, bhakti yOga which has gnAna and karma yOgas as its parts has been greatly glorified. It makes one to attain the absolute realisation of the Supreme Lord.

In the final hexade details that were missed out in earlier hexades are covered.

prakRuti(material nature), badha jIvas(beings bound by karma), Suddha jIvas(pure beings) which are in the causal state; prakRuti(material nature) and Supreme Lord who are in in the state of action; are separately explained. And those points that are not covered earlier while explaining karma, gnAna and bhakti yOgas are explained in the last hexade.

Then with 18 slokas, each chapter is thoroughly explained.

Misplaced familial affection and mercy has deluded arjuna and started to misjudge the righteous war to be unjust one. Such deluded arjuna has surrendered to KrishNa and asked for counsel. To dispel such ignorance of arjuna Bhagavadgeeta is started.
